HALONG BAY TOURS

Halong Bay Tour with Thuy Duong Hotel

  • Thien Cung Grotto is situated on the south west side of Halong Bay, 4kms from the wharf outside of Halong City. This grotto is recently discovered, one of the most beautiful grottoes in Halong Bay. The way to Thien Cung is a perilous one, covered on both sides by thick forest. After entering a narrow gate, the grotto's 130-meter long girth opens up.

Getting in we are more astonished in front of the very animated and splendid beauty which is made from stalactite. On the east wall of the grotto, there is a grandiose and imposing picture with characters of tales. Going in the Thien Cung Grotto, we have a sensation of just watching a unique, meticulous, interesting fine-art museum which is made by nature, get out of the imagine ability and intellect of man.
  • Dau Go Grotto
Situated on Driftwood Island (Dao Dau Go), next to Thien Cung Grotto, belong to Halong Bay. Seen from afar, the entrance to the grotto appears to be blue and has a shape similar to that of a jellyfish. After 90 steps up the island, the entrance is reached.

The ceiling of the grotto is about 25m. Hundreds of stalactites falling down from the roof of the grotto look like a waterfall. The grotto is divided into three main parts. The exterior is a room with a vault full of natural light. Many forms may be seen in the rock formations of the chamber, depending on the imagination of the visitor of course.

The name Driftwood Grotto came from a popular story of the resistance war against the Yuan - Mongolian aggressors. In a decisive battle, Tran Hung Dao was given the order to prepare many ironwood stakes here, to be planted on the riverbed of Bach Dang River. The remaining wooden pieces found in the grotto have given it its present name. And the name Dau Go is associated with the legend that General Tran Hung Dao (1226-1300) hid ironwood stakes in preparation for the Bach Dang battle against the Yuan-Mongolian invaders.

If the Thien Cung Grotto is monumental and modern (in its natural form) then Driftwood Grotto is solemn, but also grandiose. In "Marvels of the World," published in France in 1938, the author called the grotto "Grotte desmerveilles" (a site of many marvels). In 1917, Emperor Khai Dinh came to visit the grotto and amazed by the beauty of the place, ordered the erection of an engraved stone stele singing the praises of Halong Bay and the grotto.
  • Sung sot cave(surprising)
Situated in the centre of the UNESCO declared World Heritage area, Sung Sot or Surprise Grotto is on Bo Hon Island. It is one of the finest and widest grottoes of Halong Bay.

From the wharf, you climb 50 steep stone stairs to the mouth of the grotto, which lies 25m above the sea level. Going down some 10 stone stairs, you reach the mouth of a grotto. The grotto covers some 10,000m2. Inside the grotto there have thousands of stalactites and stalagmites along the 500-meter paved passage. Many stalactites hang from the high ceiling, with numerous possible forms and shapes.

Luon Grotto is situated on Bo Hon Island, 14km south of Bai Chay Beach. In front of the grotto is Con Rua (Tortoise) Islet and the Sky Gate is on the right. Here the cliffs stretch vertically out of the pure blue and smooth water.

At the water level, an arched entrance leads to the grotto, just at the base of the island. Passing through the pretty entrance, you come across a tranquil round lake, surrounded by luxuriant trees and high dangerous stone walls. Inside the grotto, the 1-km2 brackish lake is surrounded by mountains.

The beauty of the site is the mingling of a number of factors: the mountain's size and form, the colour of the water and the clouds.

Watter puppet

We do not know whether water puppets appear in other countries or whether they remain only in Viet Nam, but we do know that they continue to spread and gain intimacy with their audiences. If you want to see puppets in their true environment, you must watch them in the cradle whether they began – in the open air of a village in Viet Namnorthern Red River Delta.

The village had organized the performance to celebrate spring. The puppeteers were not professionals but, instead, farmers from a village puppetry guild. They had practiced with puppets they’d carved. Their characters were men, women and children, the old and the young... The performers used stories from Vietnamese traditional theater and tales of national heroes who have resisted invaders. Their characters cultivated rice, caught fish, and tended ducks. Everyone laughed when a fox puppet nabbed a duck and when uncle Teu (a puppet serving as master of ceremonies) made a joke.

Vietnamese water puppets probably began as a ceremony to pray for water to nourish the rice crop. For that reason, the mythical dragon (a positive image in Vietnamese culture) is a particularly strong character. The Red River Delta is hot, humid and filled with rivers. Every village has a pond or lake that can serve as a water-puppet theater. The weather must be warm since the performers stand in waist-deep water for hours. A theatrical set, which is often a village temple, separates the audience from the performers who works from behind a bamboo curtain. They manipulate their puppets at the far end of the bamboo pole about two meters long and must keep the pole under the water. The heavy wooden puppets held so far from the puppeteers require that performers be very strong.

During French colonialism, urban Vietnamese did not know about water puppets because only farmers perform such puppetry and only for their own neighbors. As the result, water-puppet scenes take place in rural settings with rice paddies, fishponds, bamboo thickets, banyan trees, wells and of course the village temple. The scenes include cultivating with water buffalo, buffalo fights, irrigating, harvesting and winnowing rice; boat races; kids swimming and racing and performing water acrobatics; cavorting fish and frogs; dancing turtles and phoenixes; and dragons spewing smoke.

The casts of puppet characters also includes farmers and village workers such sawyers, blacksmiths, and carpenters. All settings are within the village. The only connection to the outside is a procession for a villager who returns from successfully completing the competitive mandarin exams.

Farmers in the Red River Delta traditionally make their living from wet-rice cultivation. They must work hard in the rice paddies and continually fight against floods. Sincefarmers prize their intimacy with earth and water, their water puppets praise the labor, perseverance, and optimism of farming life in both the family and the village. Double meaning and satire illuminate the struggle between good and evil, with evil resulting in its own lesions.

Water puppets incorporate Vietnamese animism as well as Buddhism, Taoism and especially Confucianism. Spectators sitting amidst rice paddies as they watch the waterpuppets soon sense how Vietnamese farmers live together with spirits in an atmosphere of pantheism.

Ethnic dance

The rich heritage of the culture of Vietnam has given rise to the unique music and dance in Vietnam. It has both indigenous and foreign influences which has given it a character of its own.

Music and dance in Vietnam has been strongly influenced by the trends in the royal courts. For instance, Nha Nhac is the kind of Vietnamese music synthesized by the Nguyen Kings of the Nguyen Dynasty, the last dynasty of Vietnam. It was played in the royal court. The court also had dances mostly on the theme of wishing long life for the king and prosperity for the country. These dances are even performed today.

Quan ho is the other form of music in Vietnam. It is most popular in Bac Ninh Province and Bac Giang Province. Many variations to this Quan ho exist especially in northern Vietnam. Sometimes it is also improvised and is used in courtship rituals. Ho is somewhat the southern version of Quan ho with love, courtship and the countryside as the common themes.

Post 1986, musicians like Pham Van Ty have played a huge role in reviving the rhythmic and trance-oriented hat chau van or hat van. This form of music in Vietnam is used to raise spirits during rituals. Another popular folk music in Vietnam, ca tru is mostly sung by female singers.

Another form of Vietnamese music is the nhac dan toc cai bien. It is a comparatively new form of folk music arising in the 1950s. It is a fusion of traditional music and Western musical notations. It has been strongly criticized for diluting the traditional music. Tan nhac, meaning modern music, was developed in the 1930s by Nguyen Xuan Khoat.

Music in Vietnamese theatre includes hat tuong, hat cheo and cai luong. Cheo is the oldest surviving form of Vietnamese opera. It began in the 11th century while tuong arrived in the 13th century from China for the entertainment of the royalty. The themes of tuong were historical or concening the laws of social decorum. Cai lu’o’ng originated in the 12th century. The theme of Cai lu’o’ng was historical and contemporary.

The traditional musical instruments of Vietnam include Dan bau, Dan gao, Dan nguyet, Dan nh?, Dan tam thap l?c, Dan tranh, Dan ty ba, and T'rung.
Music and dance in Vietnam is renowned for the versatility and variety.Vietnamese dance forms today include the ancient Cham and Hmong dance, ballet and modern dance.

There is the Lion’s dance, a popular dance in Vietnam, that is celebrated in North Vietnam on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Lunar Year, and the Unicorn dance in South Vietnam on the Tet holidays. While in the north the dance takes place at night, the people in the south perform it during the day.

A sturdy of music and dance in Vietnam will help you understand the customs and traditions of the Vietnamese, their beliefs and aspirations and their dreams.
